If you’re just getting started with your own online business, then you probably don’t know just how crucial it is for you to plan beyond the first product that you plan to sell. When you don’t plan for the future, you’re setting yourself up to be a 1-hit wonder.

Most marketers rest on their laurels, assuming they’ll start with one, see if it works, and then make plans for a backend product line. By then it’s too late, notes Tiffany Dow in her new eBook. You have to strike while the iron is hot and be ready to take your customers from one product to the next without delay.

For instance, if you’ve chosen to launch your own parenting site and write an eBook about pregnancy, then you can map out a plan for that particular demographic. She’s a mom-to-be, so what else will she need in the future?

Baby naming eBook, childproofing your home, colic, immunizations, and potty training are all subsequent topics your reader will be interested in. As time goes on, you’ll expand your product line to grow with your clients’ needs – into preparing your child for kindergarten, teaching him how to get along with others, and more.

Don’t try to stretch your first product out to cover every little detail your target audience needs to know. Instead, leave the door open for more products you can create and cater to their needs again and again. Don’t worry about a 400-page eBook you’ll sell for $97. Instead, think of a dozen eBook titles you can sell for $47 each.

With every step you make and with every plan that you formulate, you’re always going to have to keep your eye on the future. The best way to do this is to do your homework. A 1-hit-wonder sees the initial profits roll in and isn’t prepared for the downward spiral their income is going to take when the shelf life shortens.

Plotting out your entire product line will allow you to continue moving seamlessly from one project to the next, with no delay in time. Your profits will gradually increase over time, and you won’t feel the crunch of losing momentum on any of your eBooks because you can cross-promote them. When a person buys your childproofing eBook, you can promote your immunization one, and vice versa.

Don’t force yourself into a corner where you have to try to find a new niche to tap into every time you finish a product launch. Find one niche, and keep your product creation honed in on their continuous needs.

Stop yourself from being a 1-hit-wonder. Grab a copy of Building an eBook Empire today!

I hear from so many webpreneurs who are struggling to build their online sales or trying to build residual income from online sales.

Affiliate marketing is a great way to build residual income by helping promote OTHER people’s products. You can join individual affiliate programs or use programs like Clickbank.com(R).

While I like Clickbank, and they are a great marketplace… they are limited to many restrictions to sell products or earn affiliate commissions…

I’ve discovered a new FREE marketplace where you can sell any product you want – your OWN product or you can become an instant affiliate for ANY item in their huge marketplace.

It is called PayDotCom.com! Did I mention it is 100% FREE to join (you know how much I love FREE!).

By now, almost EVERY SINGLE SERIOUS online marketer has an account with PayDotCom.com.

OH! – They also have their own affiliate program now that pays you COLD HARD cash just for sharing the site with others. Just like what I am doing with you…and yes, if you join, you are helping build MY online income!

They give you cool tools like BLOG WIDGETS, and they even have an advertising program to help you get traffic to your site.

If you want an ARMY of affiliates to sell your products for you, they also allow you to have Free placement in their marketplace!

Even better… If your product becomes one of the Top 25 products in its category in the marketplace (not that hard to do)…

…then you will get Free advertising on the Blog Widget which is syndicated on THOUSANDS of sites World Wide and get Millions of impressions per month.

So, what are you waiting for…

PayDotCom.com ROCKS!

You have nothing to lose, right now it is Free to join.

Are you stuck finding a unique marketing strategy to promote your business?

Here are three simple steps you should be following:

1. You want to make money so you need products to promote. You can create your own products or become an affiliate marketer. Your first goal should be in getting sales.

2. Once you have begun getting sales, you can now focus your marketing on building relationships with your customers. You want to become known and a great marketing strategy is to have your customers promote you and your products.

3.Now it is time to build your brand. You want to assicate your brand with the benefits of your products to create a demand for them. You will also be maintaining relationships with your customers by continuing to provide them with products that they need.

If you look at the diagram below you will see that there is a “sweet” spot that you can target for niche marketing.

So, sit down and plot a course of action following these three simple steps. It is important to break the “big picture” into small pieces so it doesn’t overwhelm you.

Be consistent but don’t be afraid to try something “out of the box” and unexpected. You never know where your true passion will take you. Once you find something you are passionate about, be the best you can be doing it.

Beth Woodward’s book “How to Market From Your Comfort Zone” is a great resource to start with.

Do you have any “out of the box” marketing stories to share?

Of course, if you get stuck and need help, a Virtual Assistant can be invaluable! email me

Recommended Resource

Marketing can be a daunting task for some; intimidating—a “have to”—a “should” for others. Does this sound familiar? “I don’t want to feel like I’m selling.” Here’s the bottom line. If your passion is not coming through your marketing approach, it becomes the elephant in the room. Your prospective client sees your lack of confidence and off they go.

“There’s a powerful message contained within the stories in this book: never sacrifice your authenticity for the sake of growing your business because THE WAY to grow your business is by giving yourself permission to BE exactly who you are. Beth Woodward has done a marvelous job pulling together examples of what it looks and feels like to market your business authentically. Allow these stories to inspire you to see new ways of marketing the business you love, in ways you may have never imagined!” ~ Cari Vollmer, LifeOnTrack.com

I came by my entrepreneurial spirit naturally, I think. I had training from a master entrepreneur – my Dad!

He taught me to have no fear to try out something new and that there is no such thing as failure, just learning experiences.

My dad learned from his father who was a fur trader and general store owner in the remote far northern wilds of Alberta.

Dad often had wild and crazy business ideas – some of them “stuck” and some of them fell by the wayside.

Dad was a very successful entrepreneur. When he retired, he owned the largest auto wrecking yard in Alberta – over 20 acres of vehicles! The business was one of those wild and crazy ideas that stuck. A pic of his business is here.

Quite often those wild and crazy ideas are how entrepreneurs become successful. It is all about having no fear, seeing and then seizing the opportunity.

Guest Post, Marcy Nelson-Garrison

If you are not currently thinking about creating products you are missing out on a powerful way to leverage your time, monetize your gifts and talents and build your coaching business.

If you HAVE made the decision to build your product funnel, you need to be strategic about it. As a creative person there are all sorts of products you “could” create. Once you tap into the creative flow, ideas will come easily and frequently. But just because you could create something doesn’t mean you should. Not every idea deserves your attention and energy, no matter how cool – assuming of course that your intention is to build your business.

To stand out from the crowd and take your business to the next level you need to identify your unique stand or stake in the ground. What is the core message that’s deeply important to you and to your ideal clients. This is important to identify as it will be the foundation of your three part strategy. Everything you create will reflect that deeply held position. Once you have identified that you are ready for the 3 step strategy.

Your 3 Step Strategy for Creating Products and Programs

Step 1 – Create a relevant free gift.

This is the first place all of you should begin – even if you don’t take the next two steps. Create something that you will give away free in exchange for an email address. You want it to speak to your ideal client, reflect your stake in the ground and begin to establish you as an expert in some way. It’s a way for potential clients and customers to get to know you and what you stand for. AND – it solves a problem or answers a question for them. This type of product can take many forms; an ecourse, a small ebook, a special report, an audio recording, a free teleclass, an assessment, a checklist etc.

Your free gift will be tied to your newsletter subscription service. You are using it to strategically build your list of potential clients and customers. Through your newsletter you will continue to build a relationship with them. People buy from those they trust and see as credible. It’s not just about creating it and parking it on your web site. You need to actively direct people to your free offering. Speaking, networking, article marketing are all opportunities to tell people about your free gift. It’s so much easier to sell the free thing.

Step 2 – Create a fee based product that highlights your expertise

This is where you really begin to establish yourself as a leader in your niche and market, not to mention generating additional revenue from the list you have been building. Not only does this type of product establish you as an expert with potential clients, it has a similar impact on other professionals in the community. This type of product will begin to open doors for guest appearances as an expert and for joint venture opportunities. Your visibility and credibility will grow as you are exposed to other peoples lists and get endorsements from them for your product.

Think about some of the coaches, trainers in the industry making 6 and 7 figures. They all started with this type of product and often more than one. Some examples; Kendall Summer Hawk started with a product teaching clients how to charge what they are worth, Laura West started with her Joyful Business Guide, Ali Brown started out initially with a product on creating successful ezines and later her Online Success Blueprint, Andrea J Lee, with her Pink Spoon Marketing. All of these products established them as experts with their own unique stand and gave them instant credibility that was then leveraged. Products in this category include; multi-media home study programs, recorded tele-seminar or tele-seminar series, a radio program, books and workbooks, workshops. All of these products can be leveraged and scaled and this phase of creating can be expanded.

Step 3 – Create a big ticket program and product

The first two steps give you the means to build your list and grow your visibility. As your visibility grows, your stature in the industry grows and that can be leveraged into much higher ticket products and programs. There will be people on your list willing to pay for premium services. These programs might involve a 6 month or year long commitment, they could be small mentoring or mastermind groups, a small elite group coaching package or even private individual retreats. Sometimes the programs have labels attached to them like platinum, gold, or diamond but not necessarily. And you can use your step 2 product(s) as bonuses for high ticket customers.

In terms of high-end products, these are often a large set of recordings and transcripts from a high-end live training event or a collection of material usually offered to private high-end clients. These types of products are generally priced in the $1000-$2000 range. The coaches highlighted in Step 2 have all leveraged their product(s) and subsequent visibility into these types of high-end programs. It’s good to remember that none of them started out there but built their way to that 6 and 7 figure income.

This is the kind of business growth that is possible for you too if you have this strategy in mind as you create!

I just read an article in the Times Colonist (January 6th, 2011, Business Section) on Bill C-28, the Fighting Internet and Wireless Spam bill, which was granted royal assent in December and tightens up the war against spam. It brings Canada into line with the spam rules already in force in the US.

One point of interest is that businesses that hire third-party contractors (like Virtual Assistants!) to put together their marketing campaigns cannot claim ignorance if their contractor doesn’t follow the rules.
